WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State scored seven runs in the seventh inning to pull away for an 11-1 win over Furman in game one of a three-game series.
Luke Ritter went 3-for-4 with two doubles, while
Jordan Boyer went 2-for-3 with three RBI, a double and a home run.
Starter
Codi Heuer went six innings and gave up one run on one hit with three walks and a career-high 11 strikeouts.
The Shockers wasted no time jumping on the board in the first.
Luke Ritter led off with a double and with runners at first and third, Mason O'Brien singled through the right side to score Ritter for a 1-0 lead.
Trey Vickers followed with a sacrifice fly to score
Alec Bohm to push the lead to 2-0.
Jordan Boyer led off the fifth with a walk and moved to third on a single by Ritter. With one out, Bohm reached on a fielder's choice to score Boyer for a 3-0 lead.
The Paladins broke up the no-hitter and shutout in the sixth. With one out, Ben Anderson walked and Bret Huebner followed with a double down the third base line that scored Anderson to cut the Shocker lead to 3-1.
Gunnar Troutwine's home run in the sixth gave WSU a 4-1 lead and the Shockers broke it open with seven runs in the seventh. The inning was highlighted by a home run and two-run double by
Jordan Boyer and a two-run single from Garrett Kocis.
The Shockers and Paladins play game two of the series on Sat., March 24 at 2 p.m. and wrap up the series on Sun., March 25 at 11:30 a.m.
