Shockers Fall 3-2 to the Hawkeyes in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – Despite a career high 11 strikeouts from Bailey Lange, the Wichita State softball team fell 3-2 in game one of the Creighton Tournament to the Iowa Hawkeyes.

In the first Ryleigh Buck drew a walk with Laurie Derrico singling to get two on base but the Shockers couldn't take advantage. Lange struck out two in the first but a single and a triple down the right line gave the Hawkeyes an early 1-0 lead.

In the next inning the Shockers tied it back up with Bailee Nickerson reaching first on an error by the first baseman. Lange then singled into center field with an error getting her to third and Nickerson home to tie the score at 1-1.

Lange struck out her third and fourth in the second and her fifth in the third. In the fourth the Shockers took the lead. Asea Webber led off being hit by a pitch before advancing to second on a passed ball. Nickerson struck a deep double to center field to get Webber home and gave the Shockers a 2-1 lead.

Lange had her first test of the day in the bottom half, a single, hit by pitch and intentional walk loaded the bases but her eighth strikeout of the day kept the Hawkeyes at bay.

Buck led off the fifth with a walk but the Shockers couldn't take advantage. Lange earned her ninth and 10th strikeouts in the bottom half, a new career high for the junior.

In the sixth, the Hawkeyes leveled the score at 2-2. A single was followed by a deep triple to right field to get the runner home. A walk put runners on the corners with an intentional walk loading the bases before a single to second base gave the Hawkeyes a 3-2 lead. Lange got her 11th strikeout to end the inning.

The Shockers attempted the comeback in the top of the seventh. Wright and Derrico singled to get two on base with both advancing to third and second on a passed ball. A fly out got the final out for the Hawkeyes and moved the Shockers to 14-9 on the year. Lange moved to 8-5 in the circle.

Wichita State faces Creighton at 5:30 p.m. in the second game of the day at the Creighton Sports Complex.
