WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State dropped a close decision to Middle Tennessee State, 5-2, Saturday at Genesis Health Club.
DOUBLES
The duo of Mirolsav Herzan and
Andrea Caligiana got ahead early and never looked back, cruising to a 6-0 victory in the third flight over Jan Porteset and Gian Issa. MTSU evened the match in the first flight, with No. 48 Chris Edge and Tim Moonen knocking off
Marius Frosa and
Murkel Dellien 6-3.
Eddie Stoica and
Haru Inoue battled Miguel Fernandez and Gonzalo Raschiatore in the second flight. After trading points, the match went to a tiebreaker and the Blue Raiders pulled away (7-6) (7-3).
SINGLES
Herzan improved his record to 5-1 on the season, knocking off Chris Edge (6-2, 6-3) in flight four to even the match at one. The Blue Raiders got back on top with a win in the sixth flight from Luis Diaz over
Andrea Trapani (6-2, 6-1). Gonzalo Raschiatore pushed the lead to 3-1, knocking off WSU's
Marius Frosa in the second flight in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Holding a 3-1 advantage, Middle Tennessee took the match after a win in the fifth flight. Stoica and Issa battled in the first set, with Issa winning in a tiebreaker (7-6) (5). Issa pulled away in the second set to clinch the match for the Blue Raiders.
Murkel Dellien took down Miguel Fernandez after dropping the first set, in three sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-3). The match of the day was in the first flight between Tom Moonen and
Haru Inoue. After falling in tiebreaker in the first set, (7-6)(3), Inoue battled back to force a super tiebreaker. After trading points, Moonen won by two in the tiebreaker 12-10.
The Shockers fall to 1-5 on the season and play host to UMKC tomorrow at 12 p.m. The match will be played at Genesis Health Club.
