Shockers Defeat Tulsa in Thriller, 3-2

WICHITA, Kan. -- After trailing early in set five, the Wichita State volleyball team was able to come back from behind and defeat Tulsa 3-2 on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Charles Koch Arena. The set scores were 18-25, 25-15, 25-15, 12-25 and 16-14.  

Emma Wright led the Shockers (13-16, 8-10 American) with 14 kills and hit a career-best .500, while Kora Kauling added 27 assists and Giorgia Civita had 40 digs. Tabitha Brown added a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs, and Kara Bown tallied a career-high 19 digs. 

After a 5-1 run from Tulsa (19-11, 11-7 American), the Shockers tied it up with four consecutive points capped off by a block from Brown and Brooke Smith. The Golden Hurricane answered back with five straight points, keeping control of set one by storming to an 18-11 lead. 

Tulsa hit .265 in the first set, resulting in the Golden Hurricane taking the opening set 25-18. 

A kill from Megan Taflinger pushed the Shockers out to a 5-2 lead early in set two, with back-to-back service aces from Brown extended the lead to five. Two straight points from Civita extended the Wichita State lead to six, with an attack error by Tulsa and a kill from Wright giving the Shockers a 19-11 advantage. 

The Shockers went ahead by as many as 10 and hit .345 with 13 kills, tying the match 1-1 with a 25-15 set two win. 

Two consecutive kills from Brown allowed the Shockers to take an early 9-5 lead in set four, with Tulsa stringing together four of the next six points to cut the lead to one. Another pair of kills by Brown allowed Wichita State to take a six-point lead, with Wichita State scoring three more points to extend the lead 22-13. 

Holding Tulsa to 15 points and less than .100 hitting, Wichita State managed to take set three and gain a 2-1 edge in the match. 

Following a 4-0 scoring run from the Shockers to start set four, Tulsa took the lead off 10 straight points. The Golden Hurricane kept the momentum going by obtaining a double-digit lead, hitting .355 in the process.  

Tulsa forced a fifth set after claiming a 25-12 set four victory, coming up with 14 total kills. 

Wichita State started the fifth set taking a three-point lead, with Tulsa coming back to tie it at seven after scoring the next four of five points. Four straight points from the Golden Hurricane allowed them to take a 12-9 lead, but a kill from Taflinger tied it up at 14 all. 

Rallying to score two consecutive points, Wichita State was able to come from behind in set five 16-14, to secure the match victory. 

The Shockers will finish off the regular season on Saturday against North Texas at Charles Koch Arena at 2 p.m. Wichita State's senior class will be recognized before the first serve.
