Shockers Pick Up Five Wins in Action Packed Day One

TULSA, Okla.  – Wichita State completed an action packed day one at the ITA Central Regional with five wins, Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
 
Shockers Haru Inoue, Murkel Dellien, Orel Ovil  and Marius Frosa recorded wins to reach the round of 32, while Eddie Stoica collected a first round win.
 
Seniors Andrea Caligiana and Austin Williams dropped their first round matches, and will compete in consolation action. A native of Perugia, Italy, Caligiana fell in three sets to Oklahoma State's Brady Draheim (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). Williams, who is competing in his first tournament of the season, took on Diego Giraldo of UMKC. Williams led early, before dropping the first in a tiebreaker (7-6). Giraldo took the second, 6-3.
 
Frosa, who earned an 11-seed, took on Stefano Tsorotiotis of Oklahoma in the round of 64. After falling behind early, Frosa rallied to win the final three games of set one (6-4). The junior rolled in the second set to advance to the round of 32 slated for tomorrow.
 
Inoue was seeded (17-25) and took on Jose Alonso in Thursday's second round. Alonso, of Arkansas, hung around early in both sets before the senior from Japan took control and ousted Alonso, 6-3, 6-1.
 
Dellien took the court against Nathan Reekie of Omaha. The Santa Cruz, Bolivia native rolled on to Friday's third round with a straight-set victory (6-3, 6-1) over Reekie.  
 
Ovil collected his first victory in the black and yellow in what was a complete battle until the end with Abdoul Outtara of Omaha. A native of Petah Tikva, Israel, Ovil showed complete resiliency throughout the match. Trailing 4-0 in the first, Ovil scratched and clawed his way back into the match, winning five-straight games to take the 5-4 lead. Outtara battled back to take the set, 7-6 (3). Outtara again jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second. It was all guts for Ovil, finding a way to come back and take the set (7-6, (5)).  Ovil jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the third, on his way to his first collegiate win (6-3).
 
Stoica, one of four Shocker seniors, collected a first-round win over Stratton Brown of Creighton (6-2, 1-6, 6-3). In the Round of 64, Stoica jumped out to a 4-3 lead over No. 55 Josh Goodger of Tulsa before Goodger rallied to take the set (7-5) and the match (6-2).
 
Williams and Caligiana fell to Outtara/Lawley of Omaha (8-7 (4))  in first round doubles.
 
Frosa, Ovil, Inoue and Dellien will begin third round action tomorrow with times TBA. Shocker duos (9-16) Inoue/Dellien and Frosa/Stoica will also compete in second round doubles play after receiving first-round byes.
