No. 8 Texas Tech Downs WSU in Lubbock

, Texas – The Shockers (3-1) fell short to No. 8 Texas Tech 4-0 Saturday in the championship round of the ITA Kick-off at the McLeod Tennis Center.
 
The Red Raiders grabbed an early lead, clinching the doubles point. In the second top-25 matchup of the weekend for Shocker duo Gabriela Porubin and Fatima Bizhukova couldn't pull of an upset over No. 21 Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici in their second top-25 matchup of the weekend. Dvorak and Federici won 6-2 over No. 23 ranked Bizhukova and Porubin.
 
"I'm really proud of the way we bounced back after a disappointing doubles yesterday. We played well on all three courts, but just had a few close points to the other way," head coach Colin Foster said.
 
Tied 4-4 in the second flight, Felicity Maltby and Gabriela Talaba of Texas Tech took down Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva and Giulia Guidetti 6-4 in a close one.  Bellucco teamed up with Hsu, in the third flight. Valenstein and Rush of Texas Tech led Hsu, her first appearance of the season, and Bellucco 5-4 before going unfinished.
 
"In singles, we were just outplayed at a couple spots and were in the matches on some other courts," Foster said.
 
Dvorak defeated Saidhujaeva in flight five, 6-0, 6-1 to give the Red Raiders a 2-0 lead. No. 23 ranked Felicity Maltby dropped Guidetti in the second flight, 6-3, 6-1.  Alexandra Lazarova, playing in her second match, fell to Rush in the sixth flight (6-3, 6-1) giving No. 8 Texas Tech the match (4-0).
 
Three singles matches went unfinished, including the first flight where sophomore Bizhukova was on pace for her second upset in as many days, leading No. 5 Talaba 6-2, 5-2 before going unfinished. Bizhukova knocked off the No. 3 ranked player in ITA Rankings, Andrea Lazaro of FIU yesterday.
 
After falling 6-0 in the first set, Porubin was battling back in the second set in the third flight, with the match being tied at five before going unfinished. Bellucco too dropped the first set (fourth flight) to Valenstein, and was leading 3-1 in the second.
 
"On the whole, it was a productive weekend and we've got a lot to look forward to this season with an exciting opportunity at home against North Carolina State on Friday," Foster stated.
 
The Shockers fall to 3-1 on the season, and will be in action Feb. 2 against North Carolina State for their home opener. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at the Wichita Country Club.
