Shockers Come Back for Win Over Marquette

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Wichita State earned a dramatic come from behind win over Marquette at the Hampton Inn Invitational. After dropping the first two sets, the Shockers came back to win the next three including a 19-17 win in the fifth. WSU won by scores of 20-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18 and 19-17.
 
Tabitha Brown led the Shockers with a career-high 21 kills along with 18 digs, while Abbie Lehman had 12 kills and five blocks. Emily Hiebert just missed a triple-double with nine kills, 44 assists and 15 digs. Giorgia Civita led the Shockers with a career-high 29 digs.
 
In her collegiate debut, Brooke Smith had five kills on eight swings and hit .625 and also added five blocks.
 
"It's a turning point game," head coach Chris Lamb said. "We decided to go with Brooke Smith in the third set. That child gets better every day in practice. She is sneaky efficient and just scores. I'm super proud of Emily (Hiebert). We had to play different to come back and win. In the fifth, we out hit them and that's the match."
 
SET 1:
• Marquette earned a come from behind 25-20 win in the first set
• The set went back and forth until the Shockers used a 3-0 run to take a 12-8 lead
• The Golden Eagles came back to tie it at 14 and used back-to-back blocks to push the lead to 19-16
• Kills from Lehman and Brown pulled the Shockers within 23-20, but Marquette closed out the set with the last two points
Tabitha Brown led the Shockers with six kills in the set
 
SET 2:
• The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start on the way to a 25-18 win
• Marquette opened the set on a 9-0 run and increased it to 12-1
• A 5-0 Shocker run cut the lead to 18-14, but that was as close as WSU would get
 
SET 3:
• The Shockers got back in the match with a 25-20 win in the third set
• The Golden Eagles took a quick 5-2 lead, but the Shockers responded with a 7-0 run to go in front 9-5
• Marquette cut the lead to 17-16 with a kill, but a 4-0 Shocker run behind the serving of Emma Wright gave WSU a 21-16 advantage
• The Shockers went on to win the set 25-20 and it ended on the first career kill from Brooke Smith
 
SET 4:
• The Shockers forced the fifth set with a 25-18 win in the fourth
• The set went back and forth the Shockers used a 4-0 run to take a 19-14 lead
• Kills from Brown and Hiebert pushed the lead to 21-15 and WSU closed out the set on a 4-0 run for a 25-18 win
 
SET 5:
• The Shockers rallied for the 19-17 fifth set win
• The set went back and forth with Marquette taking the 8-7 lead at the halfway point
• A kill and ace for the Golden Eagles put them in front 10-8 and led to a WSU timeout
• WSU scored three of the next four to tie it at 11
• A kill and a block for Marquette gave the Golden Eagles a 13-11 lead as WSU took another timeout
• A Wright kill and Marquette hitting error tied the score at 13
• The Golden Eagles reached match point at 14-13 with a block, but Mikaela Raudsepp responded with a kill to tie it at 14
• Kills from Brown and Smith gave the Shockers match point at 16-15, but the Golden Eagles tied it at 16 with a kill
• A Golden Eagle hitting error gave WSU an 18-17 lead and Brown's service ace gave the Shockers the 19-17 win
