WICHITA, Kan. – With 21 hits on the day, the Wichita State softball team swept day one against Evansville, defeating the Purple Aces, 4-3 in game one in 12 innings, tying a school record for innings played in a single game. In game two,
Katie Malone allowed just two hits to win, 5-0 and move head coach
Kristi Bredbenner into a tie for second all-time at Wichita State with 168 wins.
The Shockers 12 inning game is tied for the longest game in school history with three other games, the most recent being against Evansville in 2009, which the Shockers also won.
Jenni Brooks started game one in the circle, throwing eight innings and allowing three runs on eight hits, with only two of those runs being earned. Malone pitched the final four innings and allowed only one hit and received her 23
rd win of the year.
Evansville scored first in game one after a leadoff hit-by-pitch came around to score to take a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, the Shockers quickly tied the game.
Laurie Derrico reached on a walk and after stealing second base scored on a double to right-center by
Madison Perrigan.
Both teams then went scoreless for the next six innings, before a two run-home run by Morgan Lambert gave Evansville a 3-1 lead.
The Shockers were not done yet.
Laurie Derrico cut the lead to one, with her 11
th home run of the season. Then a double from Perrigan and a single from
Ashley Johnson put runners on first and third with one out. Johnson then stole second to put two runners in scoring position for the Shockers.
Mackenzie Wright then laced a ball to left field that looked like it was going to the wall, but a tremendous play by the right fielder allowed for just one run to score, tying the game at 3.
After two more scoreless innings,
Kelli Spring reached on a single and then stole second base. A sacrifice bunt by
McKenzie Adams moved Spring to third with just one out. With
Macklin Hitz up to bat, coach Bredbenner called for the suicide squeeze which worked to perfection, giving Wichita State the 4-3 win.
Before game two, head coach
Kristi Bredbenner and the Wichita State softball team had a special ceremony, donating a check of over $1,000 to the CRB Foundation. The Shockers presented the check to Lisa Billingsly and her son Jake. Jake was diagnosed with LCA CRB1 at the age of two. He is legally blind, has poor peripheral and depth perception and is night blind.
After picking up the win in game one, Malone got the nod for game two and threw her 19
th complete game of the year, allowing just two hits and zero runs.
Wichita State carried their momentum from game one into game two, jumping out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning. Six of the nine starters were able to collect hits in the first inning, including three-straight doubles from
McKenzie Adams, Hitz and
Laurie Derrico.
With a large lead, Malone allowed just two hits for the remainder of the game and struck out seven, as the Shockers were able to defeat Evansville in game two, 5-0.
The Shockers move to 30-19 on the year and move to 15-9 in MVC play. The Shockers will honor their seniors tomorrow on senior day, for their final home game against Evansville at 11 a.m.
