Shockers Complete Sweep on Senior Day

WICHITA, Kan. – On a day where the Shockers celebrated eight seniors, Wichita State was able to defeat Evansville, 5-0 and complete the three game sweep of the Purple Aces.

Wichita State had eight seniors that were honored today, including Ashley Malone, McKenzie Adams, Jenni Brooks, Kelli Spring, Macklin Hitz, Ashley Johnson, Kennedy Long and Katie Malone.

Senior Jenni Brooks got the start on senior day and threw three strong innings, allowing just three hits. Katie Malone then entered the game and threw 3.2 innings, before freshman Bailey Klitzke collected the final out of the game. Malone ended the game with the win, collected her 25th win of the season, breaking a Wichita State single-season record.

Six of Wichita State's eight seniors were in the starting lineup on Sunday, as Kelli Spring, McKenzie Adams and Macklin Hitz collected at least one hit on the day.

Just like game two yesterday, the Shockers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning on just five hits including back-to-back doubles from Madison Perrigan and Adams.

With a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning, head coach Kristi Bredbenner made a change, sending in senior Ashley Malone to play shortstop for the last time at Wilkins Stadium.

With two outs in the seventh inning and nobody on base, Bredbenner then pulled all six seniors that were on the field. After an emotional huddle at the pitchers circle, the six seniors left the field to a standing ovation as they joined seniors Kennedy Long and Jenni Brooks in the dugout as Klitzke struck out the last batter of the game, winning 5-0.

The Shockers end the 2017 regular season with a record of 31-19 and 16-9 in the Missouri Valley Conference, and have locked up the fourth seed in the MVC Tournament. Wichita State will be in action next weekend, as they travel to Normal, Ill., to compete in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Once all games around the MVC are finished, the bracket for next weekend will be released.
