SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Illinois State scored four runs in the first inning on the way to a 7-4 win over Wichita State at the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
Willie Schwanke went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double, while
Trey Vickers went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
Starter
Codi Heuer went one inning and gave up one earned run on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Redbirds jumped on the board in the top of the first. ILS used five singles and a Shocker error to go up 4-0.
Dayton Dugas led off the second with an infield single and moved to third on a double by
Travis Young. Dugas scored on a groundout from
Jordan Boyer to cut the lead to 4-1.
With two outs in the third, Joe Butler tripled and he scored on a single from Zouras to increase the Redbird lead to 5-1.
The Redbirds added another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and
Willie Schwanke's RBI single scored
Alec Bohm to cut the lead to 6-2 in the eighth.
Colin Braithwaite's home run in the ninth and
Trey Vickers' two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth made the final score 7-4.
The Shockers next play on Fri., May 26 at 12:30 p.m. against Missouri State in an elimination game.
