SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Wichita State scored two runs in the top of the 10th to beat Southern Illinois 3-1 in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
Willie Schwanke went 4-for-5 with an RBI, a home run and a triple, while
Luke Ritter went 1-for-3 with an RBI and
Jordan Boyer went 2-for-3 with two doubles.
Starter
Zach Lewis went 6.2 innings and gave up one run on two hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Schwanke's solo home run got the Shockers on the board in the top of the second.
The Salukis tied it in the bottom of the seventh. Connor Kopach was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and stole second. He scored on a Shocker throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt to tie the score at one.
In the 10th inning, Boyer led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Greyson Jenista. Boyer scored on a fielder's choice grounder from
Alec Bohm and with two outs, Ritter drove in
Trey Vickers who had walked earlier in the inning for a 3-1 lead.
The Shockers next play on Thurs., May 25 at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the Illinois State/Missouri State game.
