WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State used an eight-run third inning to run-rule Southern Illinois 17-7 in seven innings and take the series.
Starting pitcher
Cody Tyler went five innings giving up three earned runs on five hits and two strikeouts.
Alec Bohm went 3-for-4 with two singles, a home run and four RBI.
Trey Vickers was 3-for-4 with three singles and one RBI.
Noah Croft had two RBI to go with two walks and a hit by pitch.
The Salukis used three Shocker errors to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Shockers answered in the bottom of the first. With one out,
Travis Young walked and Bohm followed with a home run to center field to put the Shockers up 2-1.
Nick Hutchins led off the second with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Sabo to tie the score at two.
The Shockers erupted for a huge inning in the third. With one out, Bohm and
Willie Schwanke both singled and
Dayton Dugas walked to load the bases. Vickers and
Alex Jackson followed with RBI singles and Croft drew a bases loaded walk and
Jordan Boyer a bases loaded hit by pitch. After a sacrifice fly from
Greyson Jenista, Young was hit by a pitch and Bohm singled to right field to drive in two for a 9-2 lead. Schwanke collected his second hit of the inning, an RBI single, to increase the lead to 10-2.
The Salukis answered with two runs in the fourth with a RBI double from Ryan Sabo and RBI single from Dyllin Mucha to cut the Shockers lead to 10-4.
Wichita State had another huge inning in the fifth, scoring five six runs on two hits, four walks and two throwing errors. Jenista led off the inning with a single and
Travis Young followed with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error. With one out, Schwanke walked and Young scored on a wild pitch. After back-to-back walks with two out, Croft was hit by a pitch. After Boyer walked for the fourth time in the inning, Jackson and Croft both scored on a throwing error by the catcher to make the score 16-4.
Southern Illinois scored three in the fifth after a fielding error to cut the lead to nine, 16-7.
In the seventh, Jackson led off with a single up the middle. With one out, Boyer and Jenista were both hit by pitch to load the bases for Young. Young reached on a fielder's choice and Jackson scored after a throwing error by the third baseman.
The Shockers are next in action on Tue., April 11 at Kansas at 6 p.m.
