PEORIA, Ill. – The Wichita State offense came alive on Saturday, collecting 20 hits in two games and sweeping Bradley on day one by scores of 7-5 and 10-1.
Senior
Macklin Hitz led the way offensively as she went 3-for-7 and drove in five runs.
Katie Malone received her 19
th win of the year, as she threw her 15
th complete game of the year and allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out four batters in the game.
Mackenzie Wright went a perfect 4-for-4 and also collected a walk, while both
Macklin Hitz and
Mauriana Jamele went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Shockers came out hot, loading the bases with no-outs in the first. After two quick outs with the bases loaded,
McKenzie Adams walked, Jamele hit a single and Hitz tripled to right field to take an early 5-0 lead.
Ashley Johnson then singled to score Hitz and make the score 6-0.
In the bottom of the second, back-to-back hits by the Braves to lead off the inning later came around to score on a triple to make the score 6-2.
In the top of the third, Hitz reached on an error and later came around to score on a single from
Mackenzie Wright to extend the lead to 7-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Braves hit a solo home run to right field to cut the lead to 7-3.
Again in the seventh, the Braves threatened, scoring two and leaving runners on first and second, as the Shockers defeated Bradley by a score of 7-5.
Jenni Brooks got the nod in game two, starting her sixth game of the year, throwing all five innings and allowing just one run on six hits and striking out five.
The Shockers got an early start again in game two, after Wright led off the game with a double, followed by a single from Spring and a double from Perrigan to make the score, 2-0.
Paige Luellen started the second with a single. After a strikeout, Johnson reached on an error by the left fielder. Then one more out and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the Shockers and
Macklin Hitz cleared the bases with a double to right-center and scored on the same play as the first baseman made a throwing error to give WSU a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth the Braves scratched across a run on a wild pitch, but the Shockers added three more runs in the top of the fifth on singles from Perrigan and Derrico and a triple from Jamele.
Brooks then collected three outs in the fifth and ended the game, giving Wichita State a 10-1 win in five innings.
The Shockers are now 22-13 overall and 8-3 in MVC play. They will finish the series tomorrow at 11 a.m.
