WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State used a seven-run inning to defeat Illinois State 11-1 in seven innings in the series opener on Friday.
Greyson Jenista went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run, while
Josh DeBacker and
Jordan Boyer each had two RBI.
Starter
Zach Lewis went six innings and gave up one run on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
The Redbirds took an early lead in the first inning. John Rave tripled with one out and scored on a ground out from Owen Miller to give ILS a 1-0 lead.
The Shockers answered in the bottom of the second.
Noah Croft led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Trey Vickers.
Luke Ritter followed with a walk and with two outs,
Jordan Boyer singled to drive in Croft to tie the score at one.
Alex Jackson reached on a Redbird error that allowed another run to score for a 2-1 lead.
WSU added to the lead in the third.
Alec Bohm and
Willie Schwanke led off the inning with singles and with two outs, DeBacker singled to centerfield to drive in both for a 4-1 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Shockers led off with three-straight walks and with one out, Boyer walked to drive in a run. After Jackson's RBI fielder's choice, Jenista followed with a three-run home run. The Shockers finished with two more runs after another Redbird error for the final 11-1 score.
