WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State used a triple play and a walk-off single by
Travis Young to sweep Valparaiso 4-3. The Shockers earned all their wins in the series by a single run, two coming via walk-off.
Starting pitcher
Cody Tyler went five innings for the Shockers giving up just one run on four hits and four strikeouts.
Clayton McGinness earned the win for the Shockers on just one pitch.
Travis Young was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two singles.
Greyson Jenista went 2-for 4 with a solo home run and single.
Jordan Boyer went 2-for-3 with two singles and a RBI.
Valparaiso got going early in the first inning with a fielder's choice RBI by Jake Hanson to take a 1-0 lead.
Gunnar Troutwine hit a two-out single up the middle in the second inning and Boyer followed with a two-out RBI single to left field to tie the game at one.
Jenista gave the Shockers the lead in the third, with a solo home run over the right field wall to make the score 2-1.
The Crusaders took the lead back in the seventh with a RBI single by Nate Palace and a RBI double by Jake Hanson to make the score 3-2.
Boyer collected his second hit of the day in the seventh with a one-out single to right-center. After
Jacob Katzfey was hit-by-pitch for the third time of the game, Young singled to the left side to score Boyer and tie the game at three.
Things got interesting in the ninth as Valparaiso had runners on first and second with no outs. Hanson hit a grounder to
Alec Bohm at third, who started the 5-6-3 triple play to end the inning. It was the first triple play turned by the Shockers since 2002.
In the ninth,
Noah Croft led off with a single to left field. DeBacker came in to pinch-hit and was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. After Boyer was intentionally walked, Young hit a walk-off single for the second time in the series to win it for the Shockers.
The Shockers are next in action on Tue., April 4 when they host Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
