Shockers Sweep UTSA 4-0 on Senior Day

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State men's tennis team swept UTSA 4-0 on Senior Day today at Genesis Health Club. The second match against McPherson College was cancelled.

The Shockers (13-12) bounced back from an early loss to take the doubles point. Christian Carrillo/Juri Reckow defeated Miroslav Herzan/Haru Inoue 6-3 in the first flight. The senior duo of Jocelyn Devilliers/Vitor Mendes teamed up and responded with a 6-3 victory over Leon Hein/Takeru Watanabe in the third flight. This was the first time all year the two seniors have played together. Murkel Dellien/Marius Frosa earned their 10th win on the season together, topping Fabian Brand/Axel Cronje 6-4 to clinch the point for WSU.

Frosa struck first in singles play, defeating Cronje 6-0, 6-2 in the second flight. Frosa is now 16-6 on the season, and has won at least three matches in three different flights. No. 92-ranked Inoue put the Shockers up 3-0 in the dual after defeating Reckow 6-4, 6-1 in the top flight. Inoue now has 23 wins overall on the year, which leads the team. Dellien concluded the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Gabriel Borunda in the fifth flight.

"I thought today was one of our better performances energy-wise that we've had this year," said head coach Danny Bryan. "I felt like we had three doubles teams and six singles guys that were very positive and focused, and that was something we wanted to do after yesterday's tough loss to Drake. I think a lot of that had to do with the leadership that Jocelyn and Vitor (provided). They set the tone in warm-ups, being very vocal, and the guys followed them. It was a really good performance, I'm glad that Jocelyn and Vitor were able to win on Senior Day in doubles, and we're looking forward to getting ready for the conference championship in two weeks."

The loss drops UTSA to 6-17 on the year.
