WICHITA, Kan. -- The men's tennis team will close out MVC regular season play on Sat., April 15, hosting Drake at the Rock Road Genesis at 12:30 p.m.
Wichita State (12-11, 1-1 MVC) is coming off a split doubleheader back on April 9, having defeated Denver 5-2, and then losing to No. 35 (in Division II) Washburn 4-3. The Shockers are currently tied for second place in the Valley with Southern Illinois, but SIU holds the tiebreaker having defeated WSU on April 1.
Haru Inoue is the lone ranked Shocker, coming in at No. 92 in this week's Oracle/ITA singles rankings after going 7-1 over his last 8 matches. Inoue currently leads the team with a 22-9 overall record, and is 10-4 in duals (all in the top flight). Newcomers
Marius Frosa (14-6) and
Murkel Dellien (13-6) have been playing well lately, having won a combined 13 of their last 17 matches. They've also been WSU's most consistent duo, coming into the match at 9-3. The next best record belongs to Inoue and
Miroslav Herzan at 6-6.
Drake (14-11, 2-0 MVC) currently stands alone in first place in the Valley. A Bulldog victory would give DU their 10th regular season MVC title. Drake has claimed the regular season championship in five of the last six season, and is looking for its seventh-straight win over the Shockers. Vinny Gillespie is listed at No. 84 in the national singles ranks.
Looking Ahead:
Wichita State hosts a doubleheader on Easter to close out the regular season, first playing UTSA at 11 a.m. and then McPherson College at 2:30 p.m. Both matches are set to be played at the Coleman Complex. In the event of inclement weather, those matches will also be moved to Genesis, starting at 11 a.m.
