Shockers Remain Unbeaten on the Weekend

ARLINGTON, Texas – Senior Katie Malone received her third and fourth wins of the weekend, defeating UMKC, 6-3, and Nicholls State, 3-2, on day two of the UTA Invitational.

In game one, McKenzie Adams stepped up and collected three hits in four at bats, while also scoring a run. Macklin Hitz, Laurie Derrico and Madison Perrigan all collected two hits in the game.

Both Kelli Spring and Ryleigh Buck collected multiple hits in game two, with Spring getting three hits and Buck getting two. Paige Luellen led the Shockers in game two with two RBI.

Bailey Klitzke started in the circle for game one and threw one inning before Katie Malone entered the game and threw the last six innings, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out 10 batters.

The Shockers got the scoring started, with Macklin Hitz scoring on a double from Paige Luellen to make the score, 1-0.

In the bottom of the second, the Roos were able to scratch across two runs on three hits to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the bottom of the first.

Wichita State tied the game again in the top of the third, scoring on a single by Laurie Derrico, and a throwing error by the shortstop.

In the bottom of the fourth, UMKC took the lead right back, on a solo home run by Byrn.

After a fly-out to right field, Derrico hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to tie the game again at three.

In the top of the sixth, McKenzie Adams singled to begin the inning, followed by a single from Wright, a walk from Spring, a single from Hitz and a fielder's choice from Derrico to score three runs and push the game out of reach, 6-3.

Malone started game two for the Shockers and threw all seven innings to receive her fourth win of the weekend.

Both teams went scoreless for the first 3.5 innings until Ryleigh Buck hit her first home run of her career, just over the left field wall to give Wichita State a 1-0 lead.

Again in the bottom of the fifth, the Shockers extended their lead with a double down the right field line to score two runs and push the lead to 3-0.

The Colonels scored one run in the top of the sixth, but Malone was able to get a groundball to get out of a first and third jam and send the game to the bottom of the sixth with a 3-1 lead.

Nicholls State added another run in the top of the seventh, but left runners on first and second to end the game and give Wichita State their fourth win of the weekend.

The Shockers are now 8-2 on the season and will be in action again tomorrow for the final game of the UTA Invitational against Nicholls State at 9 a.m.
