Shocker Radio Postgame: Hargrove
WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State out-distanced Loyola, 65-43 on Friday night at Charles Koch Arena to improve to 13-13 overall, 8-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Angiee Tompkins led WSU with her first career double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Rangie Bessard, returning after being out one game with injury, had 14 points and two blocks off the bench.
TaQuandra Mike added eight points, three assists, and three steals.
LU was led in scoring with nine points each from Kaitlyn Williams and Brandi Segars.
For the game, WSU out-shot the Ramblers, 43.1 percent (28-65) to 35.7 percent (15-42). The Shockers also won the battle of the boards, 41-28, and created 25 Loyola turnovers, 14 of them were steals.
After leading by as much as 18 to end the third quarter, LU cut the lead to nine in the first 2:35 of the fourth quarter. WSU extended the lead back to 18 at 3:58 on a Bessard jumper, then later to 20, 63-43, on a Lockhart three-pointer at 1:29 and to 22 points on a
Hannah Mortimer layup with six seconds remaining to give the Shockers the win, 65-43.
In the third, WSU extended the lead to 18 twice in the last minutes of play, the last time on a Bessard layup with 20 seconds on the clock to give WSU a 47-29 lead as the Shockers out-scored LU, 15-9, in the frame.
The two teams opened the game trading baskets and missed shots with the Ramblers leading, 5-4, at the 4:51 media timeout. There were six total turnovers and eight missed shots in the first five minutes, with LU going 2-for-8 from the field.
Three treys by Loyola boosted the Ramblers' lead by as much as six through the last half of the quarter, 14-8, at 1:02. The Shockers then scored five-straight points, - including the first three-pointer of the game by Williams - to cut the lead to one, 14-13, Loyola.
A breakaway layup to open the second quarter by
Keke Thompson after a Tompkins steal gave WSU its first lead in five minutes, 15-14.
The two teams traded baskets then WSU took the lead at 8:47, 17-16, on a Mike basket as the Shockers held off the Ramblers the remainder of the quarter to finish with their largest lead of the half, 35-20.
For the half, WSU out-shot the Ramblers, 45.2 percent (14-31) to 35 percent (7-20). WSU was led in scoring by Tompkins and Williams who had eight each. Kaitlyn Williams had nine for LU. WSU forced 13 Loyola turnovers in the half and led on the glass, 21-13, at the break, which included seven boards by Tompkins.
Wichita State is next in action 2 p.m., Sunday on Senior Day against Indiana State in the Shockers' final home game of the season. WSU's seniors will be introduced following the game.
