Shockers Run Away from Indiana State, 67-43

WICHITA, Kan. --  Wichita State defeated Indiana State, 67-43, Sunday afternoon behind the second-straight double-double by Angiee Tompkins and a team-leading 17 points from Rangie Bessard.

Thompkins had 15 points and 10 boards for WSU while ISU's Wendi Bibbins had 12 points and 10 boards. WSU out-shot the Sycamores, 39.3 percent (24-61) to 24.6 percent (15-61) for the game.   

Following the game WSU honored seniors, Hannah Mortimer, Marija Pacar, Brittany Martin and TaQuandra Mike, in their final home game. WSU has two more regular-season games next week.

After leading 38-27 at the half, WSU opened the second half on a 9-2 run, and by the media timeout at 4:00, led 51-34, after out-scoring ISU, 13-7.  WSU extended the lead to 20, 58-38, over the next four minutes of the quarter.

WSU's 20-point lead in the fourth improved to 25 points, 65-40, at 7:01 on a layup by Mike after a Lozada-Cabbage steal, which was the Shockers' largest lead of the game.



In the first quarter, WSU set the tone early with an 18-8 lead behind nine early points from Bessard, the last on a free throw at 2:16 for the 10-point Shocker lead. Later, Tompkins added two free throws with 41 seconds left to put WSU up 20-8, while Preston added a three-pointer as time expired to put WSU up, 23-8. WSU held ISU without a score the final 5:22 of the quarte

To open the second quarter, WSU's defense held the Sycamores without a basket until the 7:45 mark, a three-pointer by Telfair that broke a seven minute, 37 second drought.  Later, a Tompkins traditional three-point play gave WSU another 15-point lead, 28-13, at 6:18. Bessard gave WSU a 30-13 lead with a basket at 5:37 just before the media timeout.

ISU cut the lead to eight, 34-26, with  a 13-4 run that was capped by two free throws by Artis. WSU closed the half on a 4-1 run, including a jumper by Thompson with six seconds remaining to give the Shockers a 38-27 halftime lead.

Bessard and Tompkins had 11 points each to lead WSU while Bibbins and Smith had six each to lead the Sycamores. WSU held ISU to 28.6 percent (10-35) shooting while the Shockers shot 41.9 percent (13-31).

Wichita State is next in action Thursday at Northern Iowa and Saturday at Drake in the final two regular-season games of the season.
