ARLINGTON, Texas – Collecting 16 hits in game two, the Shockers swept day one of the UTA Invitational, defeating UMKC, 12-0 in five innings and UT Arlington, 15-5 in six innings.
 
On the day, Derrico led the team, going 4-for-7 and extending her hitting streak to six games. In game two, both Kelli Spring and Macklin Hitz drove three runs.
 
Katie Malone got the start in game one, throwing all five innings and allowing just three hits, while striking out six batters.
 
After a scoreless first inning from both teams, the Shockers opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run by Madison Perrigan to give Wichita State an early 2-0 lead.
 
In the third inning, the Shockers caught fire, scoring six runs on four hits, including a home run from Laurie Derrico and a double from Mackenzie Wright to extend the lead to 8-0. Kelli Spring and Paige Luellen also collected hits in the inning.
 
The Shockers stayed hot in the bottom of the fourth, with singles from Derrico, Paige Luellen, Madison Perrigan and Morgan Palmer to take a 12-0 lead.
 
Malone sat down the Kangaroos in order in the fifth to end the game and give the Shockers a 12-0 win and give Malone her fourth win of the season.
 
Bailey Klitzke got the start in game two, throwing just 1.2 innings before Malone came in for relief, and finished the game for the Shockers. The Shockers pitching staff allowed just four hits in the game, while the Shocker offense collected 16 hits.
 
The Shockers scored early, on a groundout by Hitz, scoring Wright after a leadoff double. Derrico also collected a hit in the first inning to extend her hitting streak to six games.
 
The Mavs got the bases loaded in the second and were able to capitalize, scoring two runs on a single off the glove of Wright to take a 2-1 lead.
 
In the top of the fourth inning, the Shockers had another big inning, batting through the lineup for the second time today and scoring nine runs. Hits in the inning came from Jamele, McKenzie Adams, Spring, Derrico and a single and a home run from Perrigan. The Shockers were also able to score three runs on two errors.
 
The Mavs started the bottom of the fourth with a home run, but then made three straight outs to end the inning and send it to the top of the fifth.
After a catcher's interference call with two outs, the Mavs hit a two-run home run to cut the lead to five, 10-5.
 
Wichita State found the hot bats again in the sixth. After Jamele reached on a fielder's choice, Buck walked, then singles by Adams, Wright, Spring and Hitz scored five runs to give the Shockers a 15-5 lead.
 
Malone then struck out the leadoff hitter to begin the bottom of the sixth, and after a single, Malone struck out one more to get the second out of the inning. A pop-out to Hitz ended the game, giving Wichita State the 15-5 in just six innings.
 
The Shockers are now 6-2 on the season and will be in action again tomorrow as they take on UMKC at 10 a.m., and Nicholls State at 3 p.m., for the second day of the UTA Invitational.
