WSU Drops Two Games on Day One in Arizona

TEMPE, Ariz. – On day one of the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz., the Shockers dropped two games to South Dakota and Arizona State by scores of 3-2 and 6-4 on Friday.
 
Laurie Derrico led the Shockers on the day, collecting three hits including a home run in game one against South Dakota.
 
Bailey Klitzke got the second start of her career, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on six hits but receiving the no-decision. Katie Malone then entered the game and threw the final 1.2 innings and allowed one run on just one hit.
 
The Shockers collected just three hits on the game, with one being a solo home run by Laurie Derrico.
 
Ally Wiegand of the Coyotes threw all seven innings and struck out eight Shockers to receive the win.
 
South Dakota got the scoring started on a two-run home run to center field to give the Coyotes an early 2-0 lead.
 
Derrico then hit her solo home run in the fifth inning and the Shockers scored one more run on a dropped pop-up by the third baseman to tie the score at two heading into the seventh inning.
 
The Coyotes added one more run in the top of the seventh, and held the Shockers scoreless in the bottom half to get the 3-2 win.
 
Katie Malone started game two in the circle for the Shockers, throwing just 0.2 innings and allowing five runs on two hits. Klitzke then entered the game and threw the rest of the game, allowing just one run.
 
In game two, the Shockers got off to a slow start, falling behind 5-0 early in the first inning on just two hits.
 
The Sun Devils added a run in second inning, but the Shockers fought their way back, scoring four runs in the third inning on singles from Ashley Johnson and Kelli Spring, a double from Mackenzie Wright and a two-run home run from Macklin Hitz.
 
Both teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the game, giving Arizona State the 6-4 win.
 
The Shockers are now 4-2 on the season and will play two games tomorrow against South Dakota and No. 17 Missouri to finish the Littlewood Classic.
