Shocker Radio Postgame: Adams
WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State had four players in double-figures to lead the Shockers in a 72-63 win over UMKC Saturday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State (3-8) spoiled the homecoming for UMKC head coach Jacie Hoyt, who returned to the Roundhouse after a solid playing career in the Black & Yellow from 2006-09.
Rangie Bessard finished with a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. With her 19 points she moved into 19th place on the Shocker all-time scoring list, passing Keomi Johnson (1,037 points).
Diamond Lockhart scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half to go with seven rebounds and three assists.
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage and
Jeliah Preston both chipped in 10 points apiece.
The Shockers hit 27-of-60 shots (45 percent). The Kangaroos converted on 44 percent, but missed 14 of their 15 attempts from beyond the arc. WSU won the rebounding battle, 38-29, for the eighth time in 11 games.
India Johnson and Kristen Moore led UMKC with 20 points apiece and Kiana Law added 12. Aries Washington came into the game averaging nearly 20 points a contest, but the Shockers limited her to 4-of-14 shooting and only nine points.
1st Quarter
Lozada-Cabbage scored the first five points of the game and Lockhart followed that with six straight to give Wichita State an early 13-1 lead just barely four minutes in.
UMKC briefly cut the lead to five, but an
Angiee Tompkins three and scores from Bessard and Lockhart immediately pushed the lead back to double-digits (20-8) with 2:30 to play in the period.
Lockhart finished the quarter with eight points and the Shockers shot 56 percent from the field to take a 23-10 lead into quarter No. 2. The Roos turned the ball over six times, leading to 10 points in the quarter.
2nd Quarter
The Shockers continued to hold a double-digit lead at the halfway mark of the quarter behind Lockhart and a stout defense. UMKC was shooting 35 percent with the less than five minutes remaining and nine turnovers.
Jaleesa Chapel's trey from the corner capped a 7-0 run to give Wichita State its largest lead to that point, 32-17.
Wichita State missed its last four shots of the half and UMKC missed eight of its last 10, but the Shockers still maintained a 32-21 lead. For the half, Wichita State hit 44 percent from the field and held UMKC to just 31 percent.
Lockhart led all scorers with 12 points and Kristen Moore led the Roos with 10. The Shockers held UMKC's leading scorer, Aries Washington, to zero points in the half. Coming into the game Washington averaged 19.0 points a game.
3rd Quarter
With 2:30 remaining in the quarter UMKC trimmed the lead to single digits, 46-39, after an India Johnson jumper from the top of the key.
After three quarters of play, the Shockers led 52-46 after UMKC outscored WSU 25-20 in the third.
Bessard and Lozada-Cabbage both entered double-figures in the quarter.
4th Quarter
The Kangaroos trimmed the lead to four on the first possession of the period and would remain within single digits for a majority of the quarter. After a UMKC technical foul, Bessard converted on 1-of-2 at the line to make it 59-50.
Two Lockhart free throws extended the lead back to 10, 65-55, with 2:00 left to play.
Wichita State added the finishing touches from the free throw line and a Bessard layup in the final minute.
