WICHITA, Kan. –
Angiee Tompkins posted a season high and Rangie Bessard collected a double-double to lead Wichita State in a 66-63 win over Chicago State on the opening night of the Shocker Winter Classic Friday evening.

Wichita State (4-8) improved to 9-0 in the Shocker Winter Classic, now in its fifth straight year. A win would have snapped a 46-game losing streak for Chicago State.

The Shockers will face Alcorn State Saturday night at 6 p.m. to conclude the 2017 Shocker Winter Classic.

Bessard led Wichita State with her third double-double of the season, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Her 18 points move her into 18th place on the WSU all-time scoring list, passing Tonya Lane (1,069).

Angiee Tompkins came in off the bench and scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half to go with eight rebounds – seven offensive. Diamond Lockhart added 15 points and five rebounds.

Chicago State (0-11) outshot Wichita State 48 percent to 41 percent and the Shockers failed to hit a three-pointer (0-for-3) for the second time in the last three games. WSU hit a season-high 20 free throws in 28 tries and outrebounded the Cougars, 40-25.

Tyeshia Bowers led all scorers with 28 points on 11-of-22 shooting and Phylicia Johnson added 10 points.

1st Quarter
Bessard scored six of Wichita State's first 10 points to open the game, as both teams traded baskets over the first five-plus minutes.

The Shockers held a 17-15 lead after 10 minutes with neither team leading by more than four points in the quarter.

Chicago State missed only three attempts (6-9) in the quarter and got 10 points from Phylicia Johnson. Bessard paced the Shockers with eight points and WSU forced nine Cougar turnovers in the period, resulting in 11 points.

2nd Quarter
Wichita State briefly built its lead to five, but Chicago State answered with back-to-back scores to cut it back to one, 25-24.

The Cougars then took the lead, but Aundra Stovall cashed in a corner jumper to send Wichita State into the locker room with a 29-28 lead. Wichita State finished the half shooting 44 percent, while Chicago State hit 55 percent of its attempts.

Tyeshia Bowers led all scorers with 18 first half points on 7-of-11 shooting. Bessard led the Shockers with 11.

3rd Quarter
Both teams traded the lead in the final minutes of the period before Wichita State took a 44-43 lead into the final quarter following a Tompkins offensive rebound and putback.

Through three quarters of play, Wichita State's five-point lead late in the second quarter was the largest lead for either team.

Bessard added six more points to her total and Tompkins added four.

4th Quarter
Every time it looked like Wichita State was about to put some distance between themselves and Chicago State, the Cougars had an answer. WSU led 52-48, but a three-pointer from Konner Harris cut it back to one, 52-51.

The Shockers got two big baskets in a row from Lockhart and Tompkins to go up 56-51, but again CSU fought back.
