Shocker Radio Postgame: Adams
WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State shot a season-high 65 percent from the field and had six players in double-figures to close out the 2017 Shocker Winter Classic with an 87-46 win over Alcorn State Saturday night in Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State (5-8) has now won three straight games and improved its record in the Shocker Winter Classic to 10-0.
Rangie Bessard led the Shockers with her team-leading 12th double-figure scoring effort of the season, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds.
Diamond Lockhart added 12 for her third straight game of 10 or more points.
Keke Thompson returned to the lineup after missing the last three games with an injury and chipped in 10 points in 20 minutes off the bench.
Cesaria Ambrosio reached the double-digit mark for the first time as a Shocker, scoring 10 points (5-5 FG). Ambrosio also grabbed five boards and dished four assists.
Rounding out the double-figure scorers was
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage with 12 points – eight coming after halftime and
Angiee Tompkins with 11.
The Shockers hit 34-of-52 attempts (65.4 percent) and held Alcorn State to just 25.4 percent. WSU won the rebounding battle once again (44-28), marking the second straight double-digit rebounding margin.
Alcorn State (4-5) was led by Alexus Freeman's game-high 18 points. Kristian Dewitt added 10.
1st Quarter
All five starters scored in the opening minutes to help Wichita State build an early 13-7 lead. The Shockers hit seven of their first nine field goal attempts, while Alcorn State missed nine of its first 11.
Wichita State extended its lead to 21-8 with an 8-0 run and less than 2:00 minutes in the quarter. No Shocker had more than four points in the opening blitz on the Lady Braves.
Tompkins added one more basket before the quarter expired to put WSU ahead 23-8. WSU shot better than 70 percent and held Alcorn State to a paltry 13 percent.
2nd Quarter
Alcorn State went a four-plus minute stretch to open the second without a field goal, allowing the Shockers to expand on its lead, 30-11.
Aundra Stovall capped a strong opening 20 minutes with a midrange jumper to send the Shockers into the break with a 39-20 margin. The Shockers finished the half at 64 percent shooting, while Alcorn State finally cracked the 20 percent mark (28 percent).
Thirty of Wichita State's 39 points came in the paint on 10 assists. Bessard led the Shockers with nine points and five rebounds. The 19-point halftime lead was Wichita State's largest of the season.
3rd Quarter
The Shockers outscored the Lady Braves, 17-5, over the first five minutes of the third to take a commanding 56-25 lead. Lockhart (7) and Bessard (6) combined to score 13 of the first 17 points.
Wichita State got sloppy over the final couple minutes and Alcorn State was able to put a couple scores together, but the Shockers still held a 62-39 lead after three quarters of play.
Alexus Freeman scored 10 points in the frame to lead all players.
4th Quarter
Another big run to open a quarter put the game officially out of reach with 4:54 to play. Wichita State used a 13-2 spurt to take a 75-41 lead.
The Shockers led by as many as 41 in the quarter, allowing head coach
Keitha Adams to empty her bench early in final period.
