Missouri State Takes Down Shockers, 94-71

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State scored at will for three quarters to defeat Wichita State, 94-71, Thursday night in JQH Arena.

Wichita State (2-8) and Missouri State split the series this season after the Shockers took the first matchup last week. Missouri State (2-6) hung a season-high 94 points on WSU, while the 94 points are a season high for a Shocker opponent.

Rangie Bessard, Diamond Lockhart and Angiee Tompkins combined to score 53 of the team's 71 points. Bessard finished with a team-high 21 points, marking her fourth 20-point outing of the season and 17th of her career.

Lockhart recorded her first 20-point game of the season with 20 points, just missing a career high (21). Lockhart cashed in 9-of-12 attempts. Tompkins added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench.

Freshman Fanny Hakanson made her collegiate debut, checking in for the first time as a Shocker in the first half. She played 15 minutes and finished with two points, three assists and two rebounds.

The Shockers shot 50 percent from the field, but failed to hit a three-pointer (0-8), while the Lady Bears finished at 44 percent and 9-of-22 from beyond the arc. MSU dominated the glass, outrebounding WSU 40-26. It's only the third time Wichita State has been outrebounded this season and the plus-14 margin is the largest.

Both teams were nearly perfect from the free throw line. Missouri State finished 25-of-26 and Wichita State 15-of-17, just falling short of an NCAA record for best percentage between two teams.

Alexa Willard led five Missouri State players in double-figures with 17 points. Liza Fruendt added 15, Danielle Gitzen 13 and Abby Hipp and Brice Calip both chipped in 10.

1st Quarter
Alexa Willard scored seven quick points in helping Missouri State get out to an early 14-10 lead halfway through the first quarter. Willard would finish the quarter with 11 points in helping the Lady Bears establish a 26-18 lead.

Wichita State hit 8-of-12 attempts (67 percent) in the opening quarter, but turned the ball over six times. Those six turnovers led to seven points for MSU.

The Bears shot 53 percent themselves in the opening 10 minutes.

2nd Quarter
Bessard entered double-figures just a little over a minute into the second on a jumper to pull the Shockers within four. Missouri State would then put together a run to take a 13 point lead with 4:55 left in the half.

Missouri State missed 11 of its first 15 shots in the quarter, but still added to the lead thanks to seven offensive rebounds.

A three-pointer from the corner as time expired sent Missouri State into halftime with a 54-37 lead behind 13 points apiece from Fruendt and Willard. The Lady Bears came into the game averaging 58.0 points per game, but lit up the Shocker defense with 54 in the first half alone.

MSU shot 47 percent overall, including six three-pointers in 11 tries. Wichita State didn't commit a turnover in the second quarter and finished the half at 53 percent, but couldn't stop MSU from penetrating and grabbing offensive rebounds. The Lady Bears outrebounded the Shockers 22-11 over the first 20 minutes.

Bessard (13) and Lockhart (10) combined for 23 points for WSU.

3rd Quarter
Lockhart scored eight of the first 14 points of the quarter, but MSU still held a 66-51 lead with 4:00 minutes remaining. The Lady Bears had pushed their lead to 20 right out of the locker room to begin the third.

After three quarters Missouri State continued to lead 79-61. Lockhart, Bessard and Tompkins provided all the scoring in the quarter for Wichita State.

4th Quarter
MSU won the final quarter 15-10, as both teams emptied their benches a little over midway through the quarter.
