FORT WORTH, Texas and STILLWATER, Okla. - The Wichita State tennis teams won their consolation matches in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event this weekend. The men's team narrowly defeated Pacific 4-3 at the Friedman Tennis Center, the first dual win under head coach Danny Bryan. The women's team beat Cornell 4-1 at the Greenwood Tennis Center.

The men's team lost the doubles point, with only Jocelyn Devilliers and Murkel Dellien picking up a 6-3 win. Haru Inoue, Marius Frosa, Murkel Dellien and Eddie Stoica won their singles matches to get the victory. Dellien's 6-2, 6-1 win over Pardha Adavelly was his first as a Shocker.

"I'm very proud of how the guys fought today," said men's head coach Danny Bryan. "We challenged them to be tougher as a team after yesterday's loss. They responded positively, and earned this victory. We are looking forward to getting back to Wichita and building on this win."

The women's team took the doubles point with Gabriela Porubin/Fatima Bizhukova and Ting-Ya Hsu/Tanaporn Thongsing won their matches 6-4. Porubin , Bizhukova and Marta Bellucco won their singles matches to pick up the win for the Shockers. No. 93 Giulia Guidetti and Thongsing's singles matches were unfinished.

"I thought it was a positive weekend," said head coach Colin Foster. "We pushed TCU despite the final score...we'll need a more consistent performance at all three doubles and all six singles (matches), but we'll have other opportunities and I like that our group was very receptive to my message after that match and eager to get back on the court. Against Cornell, there were a boat load of deuce-games in singles and doubles...we came from behind in many games and - most importantly - we trusted our games and executed at a good clip."

The women's team will travel to Merrian, Kan., on Feb. 12 for a triangular meet with Missouri at 9 a.m. and UMKC at 1 p.m. at the Kansas City Racquet Club. The men will host their home opener against Creighton on Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. at Genesis Health Club located on Rock Road.
