Shockers Take Down ISU, 56-42

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --  Wichita State out-scored Indiana State 17-5 in the third quarter and held on for a 56-42 win, its fourth-straight,  Friday night in the Hulman Center.

WSU (9-10, 4-4)  was led in scoring by Rangie Bessard and Keke Thompson who had 12 points each. Tamara Lee backed them with 11 points. Bessard added 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.

ISU (10-9, 4-4) was led in scoring by Rhagen Smith's 17 points. Ashley Taia and Wendi Bibbins had 11 boards each for the Sycamores.

For the game, WSU improved its shooting from 26 percent in the first quarter to 37 percent in the fourth quarter to finish at 33.3 percent (20-60). The Shockers held ISU to 28.6 percent (14-49) for the game and forced 21 Sycamore turnovers.

Linda Hargrove, who took over the reigns of the program on Monday, got her first win as Shocker head coach and her 114th win in her second stint on the sideline. She originally coached the Shockers from 1989-98.

WSU out-scored ISU, 9-2 to open the third quarter and take a 30-24 lead at 4:38 led with five points from Besssard. Mike's driving baseline layup gave WSU a 32-24 lead at 3:43, and Thompson's two free throws gave WSU an 11 point lead at 1:36.

The two teams traded three-pointers, and the quarter ended with the Shockers up, 38-27, after winning the frame, 17-5.

In the fourth, WSU out-scored the Sycamores, 13-9 through the 3:50 mark to force a ISU timeout and lead, 51-36. A traditional three-point play by Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage put WSU up, 54-36, at 2:36. ISU fashioned the final score with a 6-2 run in the final 2:36 as the Shockers won, 56-42.

ISU opened the game on a 7-0 run to force a WSU timeout at 7:31 in the first quarter.

WSU's second platoon of Thompson, Jeliah Preston, Tamara Lee, TaQuandra Mike and Angiee Tompkins came in and went on a 7-3 run to cut the Sycamore lead to 10-7 at 5:45. Lee had a quick five points in the run.

With two minutes left, WSU's starting five returned and tied it up with a 5-2 run to end the quarter, 12-12.

WSU took a 14-12 lead in the second quarter at 7:23 with a Thompson layup, and still held a one-point lead by the media timeout at 4:25, 17-16. WSU extended the lead to 21-17 by 2:02 before ISU cut it to one at the 1:01 mark after four-straight free throws.

In the final minutes of the second quarter, ISU took the lead with two free throws by Ahsli O'Neil, 22-21, with 44 second left to fashion the halftime score.

For the half, ISU out-shot the Shockers, 28.6 percent (6-21) to 25 percent (8-32). ISU was 9-of-14 from the line in the first half, while WSU was 4-of-8.

Lee led six Shocker scorers with seven points while Smith had 11 for ISU at the break.

The Shockers are next in action 2 p.m., Sunday, at Loyola (2-17, 1-7).
