EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Wichita State outscored Evansville by 20 in the second half and
Shaquille Morris recorded his first career double-double to lead the Shockers past Evansville Tuesday night at the Ford Center, 82-65.
Morris tied his career high with 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds and two assists after being inserted back into the starting lineup before the game.
Conner Frankamp was one of four other Shockers to finish in double-figures. He scored 14 points on 4-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc.
Rauno Nurger added 12 and
Landry Shamet and
Darral Willis Jr. each chipped in 11.
Wichita State (16-4, 6-1 MVC) recorded its eighth straight win vs. Evansville, while also handing the Aces their first three-game losing streak in the Ford Center.
Jaylon Brown led Evansville (10-10, 1-6 MVC) with a game-high 28 points. Ryan Taylor added 17, while no other Evansville player scored more than four points.
The Shockers shot 67 percent from the field in the second half and 51 percent overall. WSU converted on 11-of-19 attempts from beyond the arc, good for 58 percent. The Aces shot 44 percent and knocked down only six three-pointers on 19 attempts.
Evansville opened up a 19-13 lead at the midway point of the first half after holding the Shockers scoreless for more than three minutes. The Purple Aces then extended their lead to 13, 32-19, after an 8-0 run near the 5:00 mark.
Thanks to an 11-1 run to close out the first half, Wichita State went into the locker room only trailing by three, 33-30.
The Shockers were just 10-for-28 (36 percent) from the field in the opening half, while Evansville shot 46 percent. Morris led WSU with eight points and six boards after being inserted back into the starting lineup.
WSU started the second half on a 9-2 run to take a 39-35 lead, its first lead since the early minutes of the ballgame. The Aces would come right back to regain the lead and for next few minutes the two squads would trade baskets.
Behind hot shooting from Frankamp and defensive stops on the other end, the Shockers found themselves leading by seven, 60-53, with 7:13 remaining in the game.
A 13-2 Wichita State run then blew the game wide open. The Shockers led by as many 18, 77-59, with just a few minutes left.
