WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State volleyball team swept Marquette 3-0 on Saturday night inside Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers, champions of the Shocker Volleyball Classic, defeated the Golden Eagles by scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-20.
Tabitha Brown and
Jody Larson led the Wichita State attack with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Emily Hiebert added 39 assists while
Dani Mostrom contributed 21 digs.
Four straight points by Wichita State early in the opening frame gave the home team a 9-5 advantage and forced Marquette to take a timeout.
Tabitha Brown had three kills for the Shockers in the opening flurry. A kill by Hiebert put the Wichita State lead at 11-5. Later, the Shockers connected on five straight points that saw their lead go to 17-8 and force the Golden Eagles to take a timeout. A service ace by
Alex Koon gave Wichita a 22-11 lead, and they went on to win the set 25-14.
Down 7-2 early in the second set, Wichita State was forced to take a timeout. The Shockers would stay alive though, with four straight points that cut the Marquette lead to 7-6. A kill by Brown tied the set at seven. A block by Brown and Hiebert gave Wichita State an 8-7 lead and forced Marquette to take a timeout of its own. The Golden Eagles wouldn't go down however, fighting back to take a 13-9 lead and force the home team to take a timeout. Later in the set, two straight points by the Shockers cut the Marquette lead to 19-17 and Wichita State continued the rally when a Brown kill tied the set at 19 to force the Golden Eagles to take their second timeout of the set. The teams traded points the rest of the way, but the Shockers took the last two points to win the set, 25-22.
The Shockers jumped out to and early 6-2 lead in the third set, but Marquette did not falter, fighting back to eventually tie the set at 11. A block by Hiebert gave Wichita State a 15-13 advantage at the media timeout. A 19-15 Shocker lead forced a timeout by Marquette, and Wichita State won a long point to keep their lead at four, 21-17. The Shockers won the third and decisive set, 25-20.
Wichita State is next in-action when they head to Fort Collins, Colo. for the Colorado State Tournament, Sept. 8-11.
