Shockers Fall to Cincinnati in Four Sets

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State volleyball team fell to Cincinnati 3-1 on Friday night inside Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers lost by scores of 19-25, 25-22, 25-21 and 26-24.

Jody Larson and Mikaela Raudsepp led the Shocker attack with 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Emily Hiebert added 39 assists while Dani Mostrom had 19 digs.

Wichita State jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage with a block by Hiebert and Abbie Lehman, followed by a kill from Larson. With the Shockers up 11-9, back-to-back kills from Katy Dudzinski stretched the lead to 13-9 and forced the Bearcats to take a timeout. Later, a kill and then a service ace from Hiebert put the Wichita State lead at 21-14 and forced another Cincinnati timeout. The Shockers went on to win 25-19, never trailing in the opening set.

Larson tied the second set at 10-all with a kill off an assist from Hiebert, but the Bearcats scored the next two points to take the lead for good. The Shockers never let the Cincinnati lead get to more than four points, but prevailed in the second set, 25-22.

Halfway through the third set, the Bearcats scored 4-out-of-5 points to put their advantage at 15-9 at the media break. A kill by Larson cut the lead to 17-13, but later, Cincinnati rattled off three-consecutive points to stretch its advantage to 23-16 and went on to take the third set, 25-21.

The Shockers began the fourth set with three-straight points and eventually went up 5-2 off a Bearcat service error. Midway through the set, Cincinnati clawed its way into the Wichita State lead and the teams traded points for much of the frame. A block from Tabitha Brown and Dudzinski gave the Shockers a 19-16 lead to force the Bearcats to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, the visitors from Ohio rattled-off three straight points to tie the set and force Wichita State to take a timeout of its own. Later, with the set tied at 24, Cincinnati scored two points to take the fourth and final set, 26-24.

The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. against IUPUI and at 7:30 p.m. against Marquette.
