AMES, Iowa – Wichita State came back from two sets down to defeat No. 18 Creighton 3-2 in the Iowa State Challenge. The Shockers won by scores of 21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23 and 15-7.
Jody Larson tied her career-high with 19 kills and also added 18 digs and four blocks, while hitting .277. Two other Shockers finished in double-digit kills with
Mikaela Raudsepp collecting 14 and hitting. 324, while
Abbie Lehman had 10 kills and six blocks and hit .381.
Emily Hiebert had a double-double with 35 assists and 13 digs and
Giorgia Civita had a team-high 21 digs.
The first set went back and forth until the Shockers used a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. Two kills from
Jody Larson and one from
Abbie Lehman put WSU up 15-12 at the media timeout, but the Bluejays responded with a 6-0 run to go in front 18-15. The Shockers pulled no closer than two the rest of the way as CU won the set 25-21.
The Shockers took a quick 7-2 lead in the second set after a kill from Larson. WSU used a 3-0 run to increase the lead to 14-7, but again the Jays responded. A 5-0 CU run pulled them within 14-14 and they took an 18-17 lead on back-to-back kills. The Jays scored seven of the final 11 points to win the set 25-21.
WSU took command early in the third set as a service ace from Raudsepp gave the Shocks a 10-3 lead. A kill from
Alex Koon and a CU hitting error increased the Shocker lead to 15-6, but again CU stormed back. The Jays used an 8-0 run to pull within 15-14, but the Shockers used kills from Raudsepp and Lehman to take an 18-14 lead. The two teams traded points until CU scored three-straight to cut the lead to 21-20. A kill from
Katy Dudzinski and a block from Dudzinski and Koon brought the Shocks to set point at 24-21 and WSU held on to win 25-23 on another kill from Dudzinski.
The two teams traded points early in the fourth set until the Jays grabbed a 14-10 lead after two-straight WSU hitting errors. The Shockers used kills from Hiebert and Raudsepp and a block by Lehman and Larson to cut the lead to 14-13. Two more kills from Larson tied the score at 15, but CU scored four of the next five to take a 19-16 lead. A service ace from Hiebert brought the Shocks within 21-20 and two-straight kills from Raudsepp tied it at 23. WSU used a kill from Lehman and a CU hitting error to win 25-23.
The Jays scored the first point of the fifth set, but it was all Shockers after that. A block by Larson and Lehman gave WSU a 5-2 lead and kills from Larson and
Tabitha Brown increased the lead to 8-3. Three more kills, two from Larson and one from Brown, put WSU up 11-4 and the Shockers won it 15-7 on a kill from Raudsepp.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Sept. 2 when they host Cincinnati at 7 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
