U.S. Open Update

Several current and former Shockers finished up play in the first stages of the U.S. Open over the weekend.

Julia Schiller and Gabriela Porubin won their opening round at the 16-team US Open National playoff in New Haven, CT, before dropping their quarterfinal match.  In the first round, the duo beat Aryn Greene and Ansley Speaks - both current players for Furman University - by scores of 6-3, 6-1.  In the quarterfinal, they lost to the second-seeded team of Danielle Lao and Jacqueline Cako, 2-6, 6-1, 18-16.  Lao was an All-American during her career at her alma mater USC, and Jacqueline was also an All-American while attending Arizona State.  Both teams had multiple match points in the third set match-tiebreak before Lao and Cako finally won it.

Shocker alum Thiago Santos, and his partner Victor Melo, lost their first round doubles match to Benjamin Collier and Joel Rubio, 6-3, 6-7(6), 12-10.

Winners of the 16-team men's and women's doubles tournaments will earn a Wild Card into next week's US Open.
