Photo GalleryWICHITA, Kan. – Indiana State used a seven-run sixth inning to beat Wichita State 15-10 in the first game of the three game series Friday night.
The Shockers were led offensively by
Alec Bohm who went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a home run, and
Travis Young who went 3-for-4 and one RBI.
Mikel Mucha recorded the first hit of the game for the Shockers in the first, reaching on a strongly hit single to the shortstop. Bohm followed with a double down the right field line. Mucha and Bohm both scored on a wild pitch for an early 2-0 lead.
The Sycamores answered in the second inning with a three-run home run by Andrew Gutierrez, driving in Dane Giesler and Tyler Friis who both reached on singles.
Trey Vickers doubled to start the bottom of the second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Keenan Eaton. Young singled through center field to bring in Eaton, moved to second on Mucha's center-field single and scored on a fielding error, giving WSU a 4-3 lead.
In the third inning,
Dayton Dugas reached first on a single to third base and scored on Eaton's home run to put the Shockers up 6-3.
Indiana State hit the third home run of the game off the bat of Tony Rosselli in the fourth, driving in Giesler who was hit by a pitch, closing the gap 6-5.
The Shockers responded with a solo home run from Bohm in the bottom of the fourth, increasing their lead 7-5.
The home runs continued in the fifth when Hunter Owen hit a solo home run to center field. Kaden Moore and Giesler reached on singles, and a sacrifice fly brought in the tying run to even the score 7-7.
Indiana State added seven runs in the sixth, starting when baserunners Gutierrez and Andy Young scored on a throwing error to first base and Owen came around to score on a throwing error to third. Clay Dungan's double and Friis' triple brought in three more runs and a throwing error allowed another run to score to put the Sycamores up 13-7.
In the bottom of the sixth, Eaton reached on a walk to start the inning and Young singled to put runners on first and second.
Luke Ritter's single drove in Eaton and Bohm hit a double to right center to bring in Young and shorten the lead 14-10.
Rosselli hit his second home run of the night for ISU in the eighth for the final score 15-10.
The Shockers and Sycamores will play game two on Saturday at Eck Stadium. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
