WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State baseball team lost to conference-leading Dallas Baptist by a score of 5-4 on Thursday night.
The Shockers jumped to an early 4-0 lead, but the Patriots came back, scoring in four straight innings to make a late comeback. The Shockers scored four runs on nine hits, and committed three errors. Dallas Baptist scored five runs on seven hits while committing one error.
Zach Lewis gave the Shockers a quality start, throwing six innings while giving up two earned runs, five hits, and four strikeouts while only walking one batter and receiving no decision. Lewis held the Patriots scoreless until the fifth inning.
Dayton Dugas went 2-for-3 with two doubles, and scored a run.
Greyson Jenista and
Alec Bohm each added two hits and a run in the game as well.
The Shockers struck first, as Jenista and
Gunnar Troutwine hit back-to-back doubles to start the second inning and put WSU up 1-0. With two outs, Dugas would hit the third double of the inning, advance to third on a wild pitch, and then scored after a
Mikel Mucha grounder couldn't be fielded cleanly by Patriots shortstop Camden Duzenack to put the Shockers up 2-0.
After loading the bases – all on singles – in the bottom of the third, DBU pitcher Colin Poche balked to bring
Luke Ritter home. Poche then threw a wild pitch, scoring
Alec Bohm and putting WSU up 4-0.
The Patriots got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, after a pair of sacrifice flies cut the Shocker lead to 4-2.
Dallas Baptist added another run via the sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to make the score 4-3.
In the seventh inning, Matt Duce laid a bunt down the third base to force a Troutwine throwing error, which allowed Trooper Reynolds to score for DBU and tie the game up at 4-4.
Chase Williams (1-6) came on in relief in the seventh, and prevented any further runs with runners on second and third with no outs, including two strikeouts, but gave up a run in the eighth to set him up for the loss.
Jameson Hannah drove a double down the first base line to score Darick Hall in the eighth inning to make the score 5-4 and give the Patriots their first lead of the game. Seth Elledge kept the Shockers off the bases in the ninth to preserve the win and earned his 12
th save on the year.
The Shockers drop to 20-33 (8-11) and the Patriots improve to 35-16 (13-4), and will play game two of the series on Fri., May 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
