Shockers’ Season Ends in First Round

STILLWATER, Okla. – Wichita State's season came to an end Saturday morning in the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship to No. 19 Arkansas, 4-2, at the Greenwood Tennis Center.

No. 67 Wichita State wrapped up the season with a 17-11 mark and champions of the Missouri Valley Conference. The Razorbacks (20-8) advance to the second round Sunday where they will face the winner of No. 16 Oklahoma State and Bryant for a berth in the Sweet 16 in Tulsa, Okla.

Arkansas opened the match by winning the doubles point from the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Jose Salazar and Johan den Toom edged Sergio de Vilchez and Eddie Stoica in the tiebreak at No. 3 that proved to be the point-clincher, 7-6 (7-3). WSU got a win at No. 2 from Miroslav Herzan and Haru Inoue over Adam Sanjurjo and Santiago Munoz, 6-4.

The Razorbacks stretched their lead to 3-0 with singles victories from the Nos. 1 and 5 spots.

On the brink of elimination, Wichita State fought back to win two straight to cut the deficit to 3-2. Herzan took down No. 62 Jose Salazar at No. 2 in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. A few minutes later Inoue downed Giammarco Micolani on court No. 4, 6-1, 6-4. Inoue finished the season with a team-best singles record of 19-6 in his first season as a Shocker.

The final two singles matches, courts No. 3 and No. 6, would both go to three sets. Court No. 3 would prove to be the match-clincher and Santiago Munoz coming back to defeat Jocelyn Devilliers, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

The No. 6 singles match would go unfinished with William Albanese leading de Vilchez 3-1 in the final set. Albanese dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back to win set two, 7-6 (3).
