Box Score (PDF)NORMAN, Okla. – The Wichita State softball team fell to No. 12/14 Oklahoma in five innings on Wednesday, by a score of 10-1.
Kelsey Sterneker got the start for the Shockers in the circle.
Ashlynne Neil entered the game in the first inning and threw 3.2 innings.
Offensively, the Shockers collected three hits, two coming from
Brittany Fortner and one coming on a solo home run from Laurie Anne Derrico.
In the top of the first inning, the Shockers got their first two batters on base. After a sacrifice bunt by
Paige Luellen, Oklahoma collected back-to-back strikeouts to leave runners at second and third and keep the score tied at zero.
The Shockers got a quick out to begin the bottom of the first but it was followed by a single and a home run from Shay Knighten. The next three Sooner batters collected base hits and added another run to take a 3-0 lead.
Again in the second inning, the Shockers got the leadoff batter out but were unable to capitalize, allowing four runs on four hits to give Oklahoma a 7-0 lead.
The Sooners continued to add runs in the bottom of the third inning, pushing their lead to 9-0. Again in the fourth inning, Oklahoma scored to make the score 10-1.
Wichita State added a single run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run from Derrico but were unable to add any more runs, losing 10-1 in five innings.
The Shockers are now 20-14 overall and remain 6-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference play. Wichita State will continue conference play this weekend as they travel to Evansville for a three game series beginning Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
