Photo GalleryWICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State overcame a five run deficit to beat Bradley 7-5 in game one of the three-game series.
John Hayes got the save, pitching two innings and only giving up one hit. The Shockers were led offensively by
Greyson Jenista who went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
Bradley scored first on a fielding error in the third inning. Paul Solka's dropped pop-fly in right field allowed two runners to score and put the Braves up early 2-0.
The Braves added two more runs in the fourth. Andy Shadid reached on a walk, and Evan Gruener followed with a bunt. A throwing error on DJ Gasso's bunt brought in Shadid and a sacrifice bunt from Brady Wilkin allowed Gruener to score and increased Bradley's lead 4-0.
BU went up 5-0 in the sixth when Shadid led off the inning with a solo home run to left field.
The Shockers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a leadoff walk to
Greyson Jenista.
Ryan Tinkham reached on a throwing error that also advanced Jenista to third, and a subsequent wild pitch allowed him to score.
Gunnar Troutwine and
Chase Rader hit back-to-back singles to bring in Tinkham.
Alec Bohm singled to second and drove in Troutwine to shorten the gap 5-3.
In the seventh, Mucha and
Luke Ritter reached on consecutive walks and Jenista drove in Mucha with a double to right center. Another BU throwing error allowed Ritter to score, and Troutwine's sacrifice fly brought in Jenista to give the Shockers a 6-5 lead.
Bohm led off the eighth with a single to center field and
Travis Young came in as the pinch runner. Young advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a throwing error for the final score 7-5.
The Shockers and Braves will play game two on Saturday at Eck Stadium. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
