Photo GalleryWICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State baseball team fell to Sam Houston State 13-8 in the final of a three-game set on Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
Riley Gossett got the win for the Bearkats, while
Zach Lewis took the loss for the Shockers.
Ryan Tinkham went 2-for-6 at the plate for Wichita State, including a grand slam homer and four RBIs.
Jordan Boyer went 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs.
The Bearkats jumped on the board first, scoring one run in the top of the first inning off a single from Zach Smith.
After four scoreless innings for both teams, Sam Houston State broke open the game in the top of the sixth. The Bearkats started the inning with a single, double and triple to set-up a six-run inning, using five hits and two Wichita State fielding errors to take a 7-0 advantage.
Sam Houston State added three runs in the top of the eighth push its lead to 10-0.
The Shockers got on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs,
Bret Fehr walked and advanced to second. Then after a Boyer single and
Luke Ritter walk, Tinkham blasted a ball over the left field wall for a grand slam that cut the Bearkat lead to 10-4.
After Sam Houston State scored three runs in the top of the ninth, Wichita State scored four run in the bottom half on a three-RBI triple by Boyer and an RBI single by Ritter. The Shocker comeback fell short as the Bearkats went on to win, 13-8.
The Shockers are next in action on Tuesday, March 8 at Oklahoma at 6 p.m.
