Bearkats Come Back to Beat Shockers 15-11

WICHITA, Kan. – Sam Houston State scored five runs in the top of the ninth to come back and defeat Wichita State 15-11 in game one of a three-game series.

Dayton Dugas went 3-for-5 with four RBI and a home run, while Luke Ritter went 3-for-6 with two RBI and a home run and Gunnar Troutwine went 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Starter Sam Tewes went 5.1 innings and gave up six runs on nine hits with no walks and tied his career-high with eight strikeouts.

The Shockers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Mikel Mucha singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Gunnar Troutwine followed with a single that moved Mucha to third and with two outs Dayton Dugas popped a ball up that was lost in the wind and fell for a hit to score Mucha for a 1-0 lead. Trey Vickers followed with a single to score Troutwine and give the Shocks a 2-0 lead.

The Bearkats answered in the top of the third. With two outs, Bryce Johnson singled and stole second before Nate VanDyke singled to left field to drive him in and cut the Shocker lead to 2-1.

Luke Ritter led off the bottom of the third with his first career home run to put the Shockers up 3-1.

WSU added to the lead in the fourth. Troutwine led off with a double and after an infield single from Dugas, Vickers doubled to drive in Troutwine for a 4-1 lead.
Chase Rader's ground out scored Dugas and Ritter's single to centerfield drove in Vickers for a 6-1 lead.

Dugas hit his first career home run in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run shot to left field to increase the lead to 9-1.

The Bearkats jumped back into the game in the top of the sixth. SHSU scored six runs on six singles, a walk and a hit by pitch to pull within 9-7.

Ryan Tinkham led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to left field and scored on a two-out single from Troutwine to put the Shocks up 10-7.

Spence Rahm's two-out double in the seventh drove in another Bearkat run to pull them within 10-8.

SHSU tied it with two unearned runs in the top of the eighth, but Tinkham's home run gave the Shocks an 11-10 lead in the bottom of the eighth.

The Bearkats used three hits and two walks to score five runs in the top of the ninth and take the 15-11 lead.

The Shockers and Bearkats play game two of the series on Sat., March 5 at 5 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
