Box Score (PDF)LINCOLN, Neb. – Wichita State scored in each of the final five innings to come back and defeat Nebraska 17-5 in game one of a three-game series.
Tanner Kirk went 2-for-5 with five RBI and a double, while
Mikel Mucha went 3-for-6 with a RBI and a double.
Willie Schwanke pitched six innings and gave up four unearned runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Huskers got on the board in the bottom of the first with some help from the Shockers. Ryan Boldt reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved to second on a ground out. With two outs, Scott Schreiber singled him home and Jake Meyers and Elijah Dilday followed with singles to score Schreiber and put the Huskers up 2-0.
NU added to the lead with another unearned run in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.
The Shockers put together a big inning in the top of the fifth. With one out,
Trey Vickers,
Dayton Dugas and
Zach Reding all walked.
Tanner Kirk followed with a two-run single and
Mikel Mucha singled to drive in another run and tie the score at three. After a walk to
Luke Ritter loaded the bases,
Ryan Tinkham's sacrifice fly to centerfield gave the Shockers a 4-3 lead.
Greyson Jenista walked to lead off the sixth and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Vickers. Dugas followed with a walk and
Josh DeBacker singled to drive in Jenista for a 5-3 lead.
The Huskers cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth with another unearned run to pull within 5-4.
The Shockers answered with five runs in the top of the seventh highlighted by a three-run double from Kirk to increase the lead to 10-4.
A bases loaded walk for DeBacker in the eighth put the Shocks up 11-4.
WSU added six more in the ninth and NU one for the final score of 17-5.
The Shockers and Huskers play game two of the series on Sat., March 19 at 2 p.m.
