Photo GalleryWICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Omaha 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
Tyler Jones received the win on the mound for the Shockers, throwing 2.2 innings and allowing zero runs on just two hits and striking out one.
John Hayes finished the game on the mound and received the save.
Mikel Mucha and
Dayton Dugas both collected two hits on the day, going 2-for-3 and driving in one run apiece.
Omaha was able to jump ahead early, scoring one run in the top of the first inning on one hit and two errors by the Shockers.
The scored stayed 1-0 until a single by Mucha and a double off the left field wall by Dugas tied the game at one in the bottom of the fourth inning.
After loading the bases with just one out in the top of the fifth inning, the Mavericks scored one run on a passed ball and one more on a throwing error by the Shockers to give Omaha a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, after another error by the Shockers, a double in the right center gap scored one run to push the Omaha lead to 4-1.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Shockers cut in to the lead with a solo homerun from
Gunnar Troutwine to make the score 4-2 heading into the eighth inning.
With runners on first and second,
Chase Rader tripled into the right center gap to bring and two runs and make the score 4-4 with just one out.
With Rader on third, Mucha dropped down a suicide squeeze to give the Shockers their first lead of the game, 5-4.
In the top of the ninth inning,
John Hayes came in to strike out the side in order to end the Shockers five game losing streak, defeating Omaha, 5-4.
Wichita State will be in action again on Fri., March 4, against Sam Houston State at 3 p.m., at Eck Stadium.
