Shockers Fall, 69-48, at UNI


CEDAR FALLS, Iowa  -- Wichita State fell, 69-48, at UNI Sunday afternoon inside the McLeod Center. 
 
WSU was led in scoring by Rangie Bessard's 19 points as the only Shocker in double-figures, while her 11 rebounds gave her the fourth double-double of the season.
 
Madison Weekly led three double-figure Panthers with 19 points, which included five of UNI's 11 treys.
 
UNI out-shot the Shockers, 40 percent (21-53) to 37 percent (19-51), while WSU out-rebounded the Panthers, 37-32. At the line, UNI made 16-of-23 free throws to the Shockers' 7-of-11 effort, all which came in the second half.
 
In the third quarter, UNI's Madison Weekly added three treys as the Panthers outscored WSU, 18-8, and extended the lead to 54-31. WSU, which shot its first free throws of the game at the 6:37 mark. 
 
WSU won the fourth quarter, 17-15, but it wasn't enough to overcome the 54-31 deficit after three frames. 
 
Wichita State won the first quarter, 16-15, behind Bessard's seven points and a 54 percent (7-of-13) shooting effort from the field. UNI capaitalized on WSU's seven first-quarter fouls to go 6-of-6 from the line.
 
The two teams traded three-pointers to open the second quarter before UNI added two more to take a 25-19 lead at the 5:01 mark. UNI pushed the lead to nine with a fourth-straight three pointer as part of a 20-4 run when the Shockers were held scoreless for six minutes.
For the half, WSU out-shot the Panthers, 42 percent (10-24) to 32 percent (10-31). UNI took advantage of 14 Shocker fouls for a 12-of-14 effort from the line while WSU didn't shoot a free throw in the first two quarters.
 
Bessard led WSU in scoring the first half with nine points while Weekly and Sorenson and Keitel had eight points each for a 35-23 Panther halftime lead.
 
Wichita State returns home to face Bradley on Feb. 12 and Loyola Feb. 14 inside Charles Koch Arena. Loyola defeated the Shockers, 60-55, on Jan. 15 in Chicago, and Bradley defeated the Shockers, 50-44, on Jan. 17 in Peoria, Ill.
