Postgame Press ConferenceWICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State dropped a 55-50 decision to Bradley Friday night inside Charles Koch Arena on Pink Night, the Shockers' and Braves' effort to help in the fight against Breast Cancer.
WSU was led in scoring by
TaQuandra Mike who had 25 points as the only double-figure scorer for the Shockers, while BU was led by Tamya Sims' 14 points. Anneke Schlueter had 13 and Leti Lerma had 11 to back Sims, who also had 10 rebounds.
For the game, Shockers shot 33 percent (19-56) to the Braves' 49 percent (21-43) for the game.
Bradley opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 31-26 lead into the media timeout at 4:43 after a 24-24 halftime tie. The Shockers shot 11 percent (1-9) in the first five minutes. WSU battled back to take a 35-34 lead on two Bessard free throws with 13 seconds left in the frame. Bradley was fouled on an ensuing drive to the basket by Kendall, but she missed both freebies and the Shockers used the fast-break to find Mike, who drained a three to give WSU a 38-34 lead at the end of three periods.
In the final quarter, WSU increased its lead to its largest of the game at seven, at the 9:11 mark on Mike's fourth trey, but Bradley went on a 13-4 run to take a 48-45 lead into the media timeout at 4:25. BU maintained its lead and then extended it to five, 55-50, with free throws down the stretch.
In the first quarter, Bradley opened on a 9-2 run, shooting 80 percent while the Shockers' shot 16 percent (1-6) until the 4:51 which forced a Shocker timeout. WSU closed the quarter on a 10-4 run to close the gap to 13-12, including a
Jaleesa Chapel baseline jumper at the buzzer. WSU improved its shooting to 37 percent (6-16) for the quarter with the run while Bradley shot 67 percent (6-9).
In the second quarter, Mike made a three-pointer at the 7:27 mark before she added a jumper at the 6:12 as the only player to score to that point to give WSU a 17-13 lead into the media timeout at 5:48. The two teams traded baskets until the Braves put in two buckets back-to-back to take a 22-19 lead at the 3:45 mark. WSU out-scored BU, 5-2 over the remainder of the quarter for the 24-24 halfitme tie.
The Braves shot 50 percent (11-22) to the Shockers' 36 percent (10-28) in the first half, and also led rebounding 18-12, but the Shockers forced 15 turnovers and gave up the ball just nine times. Mike led WSU with 13 first half points while BU's Kendall had a team-leading six points off the bench.
Wichita State is next in action 2 p.m., Sunday against Loyola inside Charles Koch Arena.
