Box Score(PDF)DES MOINES, Iowa -- Wichita State fell at league-leading Drake, 81-59, Friday night inside the Knapp Center. The Shockers fell to 5-16 overall, 2-8 in the MVC while Drake improved to 15-6, 8-2 in the league.
WSU was led in scoring by
Rangie Bessard and
Diamond Lockhart who had 15 points each. Drake's five double-figure scorers were led by Sara Rhine's 16 points. Lizzy Wendell backed her with 15 and Nicole Miller had 13 for the Bulldogs.
For the game, Drake shot 56.6 percent (30-53) from the field to the Shockers' 38.7 percent (24-62). Each team had seven three-pointers while Drake made 14 of its 26 free throws. WSU went to the line four times and made all four.
Drake scored 46 points in the paint, 19 points off the Shockers' 18 turnovers and 20 fast break points.
The Shockers out-scored the Bulldogs, 20-12, in the fourth quarter to close the gap from as much as 30 to the final score of 81-59.
In the third quarter, DU out-scored the Shockers 21-16, to take a 69-39 lead.
Drake ended the first quarter on an 18-4 run to earn a 12-point lead, 25-13. Four three pointers paced the Bulldogs in the first frame as DU shot 64 percent (9-14) to the Shockers' 34 percent (5-13).
In the second quarter, Drake extended its lead to 48-23 by out-scoring the Shockers, 23-10, on 8-of-14 shooting.
For the half, DU's Wendell led seven Bulldogs scorers with nine points while Bessard led the Shockers with 11 points. WSU shot 33 percent (9-27) from the field in the first half while DU shot 61 percent (17-28).
The Shockers are next in action 2 p.m., Sunday, at Northern Iowa.
