Box Score (PDF)ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico scored six runs in the first two innings on the way to a 17-7 win over Wichita State in game one of a three-game series.
Chase Rader went 3-for-3, while
Tanner Kirk went 3-for-6,
Alec Bohm went 3-for-5 and
Luke Ritter went 1-for-2 with three RBI.
Starter
Sam Tewes went three innings and gave up five earned runs on five hits with five walks and four strikeouts.
The Shockers got on the board in the top of the second.
Alec Bohm led off with a single and he advanced to second on a bunt single from
Chase Rader.
Gunnar Troutwine followed with a single to right-center to plate Bohm for the 1-0 lead.
The Lobos answered in the bottom of the second. Chris DeVito led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Scottie Graham walked and with runners at the corners, Dalton Bowers' infield single scored DeVito to tie the game at one. Graham scored on a balk and Bowers scored on a double steal to put the Lobos up 3-1.
UNM added three more in the third off two hits, two walks and an error for a 6-1 lead and increased the lead to 8-1 with two more in the fourth.
Ryan Tinkham's two-out double in the fifth drove in
Mikel Mucha to cut the lead to 8-2.
DeVito's grand slam in the sixth increased the Lobo lead to 12-2.
The Lobos added four more in the seventh and one in the eighth for a 17-2 score.
WSU scored five in the ninth for the final 17-7 score.
The Shockers and Lobos play game two of the series on Sat., Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. Central time.
