LAS VEGAS, Nev. – On the final day of the Demarini Desert Classic, the Wichita State softball team defeated Boise State, 6-5 in six innings due to the drop-dead rule.

Wichita State needed to make their flight back to Wichita and therefore set a drop-dead time of 11:30, meaning at 11:30 the game ends. If the inning was not finished, the score reverts back to the score of the last inning that was finished.

For the fourth game in a row the Shockers fell behind early giving up three runs in the first inning. Wichita State then scored one run in the top of the third inning with Laurie Anne Derrico coming around to score.

In the top of the fifth inning Macklin Hitz led off the inning with a double, and two more hits from Derrico and Kelli Spring helped the Shockers score five runs and take a 6-3 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Broncos added two runs to make the score 6-5.

Due to the drop-dead rule, Wichita State ended the game with a 6-5 victory and finished the weekend with a 2-3 record.

Wichita State is now 4-6 overall and will be in action again on Fri., Feb. 26, as the Shockers travel to Mobile, Ala., to take on Dartmouth at noon.
