COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Wichita State softball team fell in extra innings to No. 24 Texas A&M on Friday night, 4-3 to give them a split in two games on the first day of the Aggie Classic.

The Shockers stayed in the game, even though they struck out 15 times and only collected one hit. Junior Katie Malone pitched a fantastic game, striking out four and only giving up four runs in 7.1 innings pitched.

Wichita State had a tough start, striking out six times in the first two innings, but after an error by Texas A&M, the Shockers scored two runs to give them a 2-1 lead after the top of the third inning.

The Aggies came back in the bottom of the third, scoring one run on two hits to tie the game at two going into the fourth inning.

Both teams remained scoreless and in the top of the seventh inning, Wichita State had runners on first and third with one out but the Aggies were able to work themselves out of a jam and head into the bottom of the seventh with the score tied at two.

The Shockers held strong in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game to extra innings. The tournament uses the international tie breaker which places the last out of the seventh inning on second base.

With Mackenzie Wright on second base, Kelli Spring reached on a fielder's choice and Wright advanced to third. Spring then stole second base and Wright scored on the throw giving Wichita State a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning.

After placing a runner on second, the Aggies eventually had runners on second and third with one out when Kaitlyn Alderink hit a double in the left-center gap to win the game for the Aggies, 4-3.

The Shockers are now 1-1 on the season and will be in action again on Sat., Feb. 13, as they take on Northern Colorado at 10 a.m. to begin the second day of the Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas.
