Shockers Face Colo. St. in MW-MVC Challenge

Opening Tips // Wichita State (6-2) plays its first true road game in a Mountain West-Missouri Valley Conference Challenge Series matchup at Colorado State (6-1)... A victory would ensure the Shockers of a winning non-conference record for the 19th consecutive year... WSU secured a fourth-place finish in last week's Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas but missed out on potential statement wins over No. 10 Louisville and No. 24 Michigan State. The team returned to its winning ways Tuesday night with a 30-point triumph over Division II Southern Nazarene.

MW-MVC Challenge // This is the sixth installment of the challenge series, which ran four seasons from 2009-12, then returned last fall after a two-year hiatus… The Mountain West has won three of the five years (2010, 2012, 2015) and is 28-17 overall. The MVC hasn't finished on top since the inaugural year (2009), though the conferences did battle to a draw in 2011 at four wins apiece… In 2016, nine of the 10 games will take place on Saturday, with a Southern Illinois at UNLV matchup to follow later this month... The three-time defending Valley Champion Shockers have been the league's most successful rep, with a 4-1 record. Their only loss came at No. 17 San Diego State in 2010. .. Last December in Wichita, WSU defeated a UNLV team featuring NBA Draft picks in Patrick McCaw and Stephen Zimmerman, 56-50.

WSU-CSU Series // This is the first meeting between WSU and CSU since Nov. 29, 1983 when WSU – led by Xavier McDaniel – earned a 64-54 victory in Fort Collins… The Shockers lead the all-time series 7-1 (1-0 at Moby Arena and 2-1 overall in Fort Collins)... WSU is 37-18 all-time against current members of the MWC.

400-Win Club Hopping // For the third time in four games, Gregg Marshall goes head-to-head with a fellow 400-game winner. This time it's Colorado State's Larry Eustachy (494-307). Marshall (430-170) faced Louisville's Rick Pitino and Michigan State's Tom Izzo on consecutie days last week. Pitino notched his 750th win asgainst the Shockers. Next Saturday WSU takes on Oklahoma and Lon Kruger. Just 49 active D-I coaches began the year with 400+ victories.

Record Rampage // The Shockers needed less than three weeks to tie a single-season school record. Tuesday's 87-57 win over Southern Nazarene was their fifth 30-point win of the year, matching a mark set previously by the 1944-45, 1953-54, 1980-81 and 2011-12 teams.

Road Work // WSU went 9-3 last year in true road games, helped by an 8-1 mark in Valley play. The Shockers held all nine MVC opponents under 40% in their home gyms...  WSU's .814 road winning percentage since 2010-11 (57-13) leads the nation.

Random Knowledge // This is WSU's first Saturday game of the year... The Shockers have not had a point-rebound double-double since Feb. 25, 2015 (Darius Carter 20 & 11 at Indiana State). CSU's Emmanuel Omogbo has already done it four times this year... Markis McDuffie has scored in double-figures in four straight...Shocker plus/minus stats are overwhelmingly positive. Regulars are all averaging +14 or better per 40 minutes, led by Darral Willis Jr. (+36.2), Landry Shamet (+32.2) and Rauno Nurger (+29.6).

Reserves Army // WSU scored 50-or-more bench points on five occasions during the month of November. The school's box score archive spans the past four decades to the mid-1970s. Prior to this season, there had been only seven other 50+ point bench performances in the program's recorded history… WSU enters the weekend as the national leader in bench scoring (50.4 per

Ball Hogs // WSU is one of 15 schools that are outrebounding opponents by an average of 10-or-more per game (+10.5 ranks 11th nationally). Colorado State (+8.2) is 30th on the same list… WSU has been outrebounded once all season (by No. 10 Louisville)… Over the past five seasons, the Shockers have finished even or better on the boards in 83 percent of their games (127 of 153).

No "I" in Team // Team balance means far fewer heroes. Entering the weekend, the Shockers ranked either first or second in the Missouri Valley Conference in 12 of the 21 major statistical team categories, yet had just two players crack the top-10 on an individual list.

It Starts with Stops // The Shockers rank 10th nationally in scoring defense (58.6) and 12th in field goal percentage defense (35.7%)… WSU has finished even or better in the turnover column in all eight games and in 13-straight dating back to last March... Over the last three seasons, they've committed more turnovers than their opponent just eight times (spanning 78 games).

Up Ahead // The Shockers host Saint Louis on Tuesday night in the last installment of a four-year series between the schools. WSU has won each of the first three meetings. The 7 p.m. tip will air on Cox Channel Extra (Cox HD 2122).
