Lockhart Scores Exhibition Game-Winner

WICHITA, Kan.  --   Wichita State's Diamond Lockhart drove the court off a Rangie Bessard rebound to score the game-winner and give the Shockers a 67-65 win against Cameron in exhibition action Sunday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.

Bessard led WSU with 17 points, while Keke Thompson, Angiee Tompkins and Lockhart backed her with 14 points, 13 points and 10 points, respectively. Bessard had 13 rebounds for the double-double.

Three double-figure Cameron scorers were led by Brittany Hill's 14 points.

In the first quarter, the Aggies used five three-pointers to take a 20-18 lead. Cameron out-shot WSU, 47 percent (7-15) to 35 percent (7-20) in the first frame. Thompson's eight points, including four off three throws, kept the Shockers close while five Aggies hit a trey for the visitors.

In second quarter action, Tamara Lee's trey at 5:17 put WSU up 28-27, but the Aggies battled back to tie at the 2:04 mark. A 32-32 tie was broken by two free throws with two seconds remaining in the half by Natalie Halbleib to send the Aggies to a 34-32 halftime lead.

For the half, the Aggies out-shot WSU, 40 percent (12-30) to 39 percent (12-31), while WSU out-boarded the Aggies, 25-17, and held the visitors to the five first-quarter treys.
In the third quarter, the two teams played to a 40-40 tie into the media timeout at 4:10 as WSU's defense pushed the Aggies' field goal shooting to 31 percent.

CU held a one point lead, 47-46, after three frames despite the Shockers winning the third quarter, 14-13. Thompson had a game-leading 14 points for WSU, while Montgomery had 12 for the Aggies through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Brittany Hill gave Cameron a four-point lead, 52-48, with another long-distance trey to force a Shocker timeout at 7:52.

The Shockers responded with a 9-0 run to take a 57-52 lead at the 4:34 mark, the last basket on a driving layup by Kayla Williams.

The Aggies battled back to tie up the game at 1:18, 62-62, before an and-one by Bessard put WSU back up three, 65-62 with 1:01 left.

An Aggie layup with 25 seconds left cut the WSU lead to one, 65-64. WSU's Lee missed two free throws and CU's James made one to tie the game at 65-65 with seven seconds remaining.

Lockhart drove the length of the court to score the game-winner at the buzzer and fashion the final score, 67-65.

For the game, WSU out-shot the Aggies, 45 percent (26-58) to 37 percent (24-65). WSU also won the battle of the boards, 48-36, but committed 17 turnovers to CU's 10.

Wichita State opens the regular season at home at 2 p.m., Sun., Nov. 13 against Creighton.
